How to Become PMP Certified!
Getting the PMP Certification is certainly not cheap, yet if you know a few tricks, you would be able to achieve PMP success with deep savings off the PMP certification costs.
1. Join PMI as member
Joining the PMI is not a requirement for the PMP examination, yet the benefits you get far outweigh the cost for the first year of membership fee (note: joining the local chapter is not required but is encouraged). For the PMP examination fee alone, the saving for PMI member outweighs the first year membership fee. Being a member, you can also gain access to many commercially available project management books, including several for the preparation of PMP examination. You can also download a free copy of the PMBOK Guide Fifth Edition which is a must for the PMP examination.
2. Join PMI Thailand Chapter
A number of benefits are available exclusively to members of the PMI Thailand Chapter.
Discounted Meeting and Event Fees
PMI Thailand Chapter members receive a discount on the monthly meeting fees. Discounts also apply to other Chapter events, such as field trips, social events, seminars, or others.
Members’ Only Meetings
PMI Thailand Chapter members are eligible to attend exclusive “members only” meetings arranged annually by the Chapter.
Membership at the PMI Thailand Chapter provides excellent opportunities to network with the Chapter’s 170+ members who all have a vested interest in the advancement and practice of project management in the Kingdom of Thailand. Our membership represents more than 60 companies in a variety of industries, such as banking, energy, engineering, construction, finance, information technology, retailing, and telecommunications, as well as Thai universities and government organizations.
Opportunity to Serve on the Board of Directors
PMI Thailand Chapter members may volunteer to be nominated for vacant Chapter board of directors positions. Serving on the board is an excellent opportunity to contribute to the Chapter and the development of project management in Thailand. Elected officers who are accredited with the CAPM or PMP certification can claim up to 10 PDUs per 12-month period they serve as board members, limited to a maximum of 20 PDUs per 3-year certification cycle.
Registration of PDUs
For PMI Thailand Chapter members who are accredited with the CAPM or PMP certification, the Chapter will handle the registration of PDUs earned by attending Chapter meetings and events with PMI.
PMI Thailand Chapter members are eligible to cast their votes in the annual ballot for election of Chapter officers to serve on the Chapter board of directors.
3. PMBOK Guide Fifth Edition
The PMBOK Guide outlines the syllabus for the examination. It contains content that would not be found on other reference books and would appear in the real PMP exam. Though some PMPs would say they have never read the PMBOK and pass the PMP exam, you will feel more prepared if you have read the PMBOK Guide twice or more in your preparation for the PMP exam. Good news for PMI members, the Guide can be downloaded free from the PMI website. You can also order the book online through PMI Thailand Chapter’s online store at http://www.pmithaistore.org. Members are entitled to a 5% discount coupon on every purchase.
4. Project Management Events
PMI Thailand Chapter provides its members and other professionals opportunities for training and professional development. The Chapter provides monthly lectures, workshops, field-trips, and orientation programs, which are currently and primarily hosted in Bangkok. Attendees at such events are entitled to a pre-defined number of “contact hours”, which can be accumulated and later used as a pre-requisite for the PMP Exam. PMI requires 35 contacts hours of Project Management Training prior to sitting for the PMP Exam. The Chapter’s organized events provide an opportunity for members to participate and earn the contact hours required at a discounted price.

5. PMP Exam Fee
The fee indicated above is the PMP exam fee for the computer based examination for membership holders. For non-members, the exam fee is US$555.
6. PMP Exam
The PMP exam is based on Project Process Group with certain percentage in place at below:
- Initiating the project (13%)
- Planning the project (24%)
- Executing the project (30%)
- Monitoring and controlling the project (25%)
- Closing the project (8%)
The exam consists of 200 multiple choice questions with each question has 4 answer choices. 25 questions was on trial which mean 0 points even you answer correct. The allocation time to complete the exam is 4 hours. Based on analysis, participant usually able to answer all question in 3.5 hours with 0.5 hours for review the answer and break.
7. Schedule Exam
– You need to submit the PMP requirements forms at PMI site. Once the PMI approve and you are eligible, PMI will e-mail you examination scheduling instruction with eligibility code which you will need to key in when you scheduling your exam.
– Once you obtained your eligibility code, you have 1 year duration to schedule you exam before it expire.
– With computer-based exams for PMI, you can register at all Prometric Testing Centers worldwide.
8. Reschedule or Cancel Exam
- 31 days or more before the exam: No fee.
- Within 30 days – 3 days of exam: US $70.
- Within 2 days of the exam: Forfeit the full exam fee.
9. Retake Exam if you failed at first time
You can re-take the exam up to 2 times within your 1 year eligibility period. After that, you are require to re-submit the PMP requirement to obtain a new eligibility code.
Should your application get audited, you need to send your audit experience validation forms to your supervisors/previous supervisors and the whole package to PMI.
